Historic Bonaventure Cemetery: Jewel of the South

Bonaventure Cemetery began as a plantation during the mid 1700’s and changed hands several times. During the Victorian area, it was bought by the newly formed Evergreen Adventure Co, and in 1876 began operating as a cemetery under that name.  The cemetery was styled in classic Victorian fashion with winding pathways, and beautiful trees and shrubs. Also large grassy areas for residents to walk and picnic, a common Victorian practice.

Evergreen Cemetery was purchased by the city of Savannah in 1907. Since then the cemetery has been expanded from 60 to 103 acres. The name was changed back to Bonaventure which is French for “Good Fortune”, not a name we would think of as a cemetery, but for a plantation in the new world it certainly works.

Bona venture is a kaleidoscope of diversity with regard to different religious sections, and style & beautiful. You will also see great artwork in sculpting on display. There’s much beauty and serenity, as well as the macabre.

If you’re planning a visit to the Savannah area don’t miss this beautiful place. You can tour the cemetery on your own or book a guided tour. If you’re looking for the unique, you will find it here.
