Some of the best of the Old West

I grew up watching westerns on TV. So, I’ve always had a love for the Old West as I saw it. Not surprisingly when I started to travel, the first place I headed was West. I searched out some of my favorite characters as I traveled and gazed at the countryside, and in some cases the old towns just imagining what it was really like back then. For that matter what really happened.

I studied history, so I knew that a lot of what I saw from Hollywood was a fairy tail. But the more I read and traveled, the more I learned how interesting my favorite characters were in real life. In most cases how much more tragic.

I decided to show a few of my favorites here. Who’s your favorite character from the Old West?

I loved the movies and tales from the West. Some of my favorites are from Deadwood SD. The main picture of this blog is Wild Bill Hickok. But Calamity Jane is a much more interesting and tragic story. Whether or not she was in love with Wild Bill, or if they were ever together romantically is not really known. But I believe not likely. But her life although infamous, was tragic. I have her picture below.

Grave of the infamous Calamity Jane.

It wouldn’t be complete for me if I didn’t add Jesse James and Billy the Kid. Not related at all. Although when the James brothers were robbing banks and trains at the pinnacle of their popularity, folks would also say Billy the Kidd was with them. This wasn’t true and not really possible since Billy the Kid was in jail and dead before Jesse’s career really got started. But I have to include them both.
